As a young boy Ian was always drawing, painting and designing. He loved to draw buildings, (inside and outside), and landscapes. His math spirals always contained at least one or more of these creations. (too nice to pitch, at the end of the school year!)

When he found out about Mario Worlds, he really got into drawing the different types of landscapes that were in the classic Mario games. He experimented with paints, pencils, and pastels but his favorite is his own made up technique using, a combination of pencil, dark ink pen and colored pencils to give it a vibrant shiny look. This self taught technique makes the colors come alive!  He also experimented with different types of clay and made dioramas of the same theme.  When he showed and interest in learning graphic art, we got him the  Art Academy Home Studio, for the wii.  With this, he began to create a collection of still life. Every day, Ian draws and makes something new; and our walls and rooms are adorned with his creations!

Ian was a finalist in the Salinas Art Contest 2017, “The Colors of Texas” (c) Ian Cates
This is not about art but we think it is pretty cool that Ian was in the top ten in his school in the Science fair competition!
