I was inspired by watching Dr. James Dobson’s Building a Family Legacy DVD series, that prayer is one of the most important things that you can consistently do for your family. Dr. Dobson shares of how his Grandfather set aside an hour consistently to pray each day for his family, and how that this consistency changed the course of his life and the course of the next generation. His stories hit a personal chord with me as I watched. He had beautifully textured his teachings with story lines and videos of his parents, and grandparents, and shared the experiences that made him the man that he is today.

It really hit home with me that we have a family legacy too! Even though Texas is not such a small world anymore, my own Grandmother had Dr. Dobson in her Sunday school class when he was around the tender age of three. She told me she remembered the Dobson’s as a sweet young couple with a little boy, but that it just goes to show you, you never know the lives you are going to touch and what they will turn out to be.

When I was a child, I often spent the night with my grandma. She knew how to have fun and be playful. She would make us a root beer float and have conversations you wished would never end. With Grandma, you never felt a generation gap. She shared the Lord in her life, whether she was talking to you directly about serving Jesus, or whether it was in her way of speaking about nature, watching the birds, tending to her flower garden, she always had a way of causing you to ponder the wonders of God’s creation. Just before bed, she would sometimes just out of the blue, start praying. She would not stop until she had “prayed through” for all of the family.   Her prayers were not religious, dutiful or self-righteous prayers but heartfelt cries for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she was finished she would go to sleep but there was not a dry eye. Her cries still encircle the throne of heaven today for our family. We have seen the results of many of her prayers come to fruition.

The month of June is a time of reflection. It is the month we got married in 1998. It is the month in which families honor Fathers and it is also the month of my Grandma Ault’s Birthday. She went to heaven in 2003, but I believe that sometimes she is peeking over the bannisters of heaven at us.

In Hebrews 12:1, we can confirm this. It is written: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Grandma would say. “Finish the course with Joy! For your reward is GREAT!”  I speak to you dear, friends and family.  Carry the torch and Let the Legacy Live on!  LC
